Contributing to a healthy environment

Working today to secure a healthier tomorrow

We’ve spent years enhancing the performance and efficiency of our buildings — with certifications as proof. And since 2018, we’ve been broadening our sustainability scope to include networking and learning alongside global business peers on sustainable business practices. Most important, our approach to contributing to a healthy environment is an extension of our purpose, because the actions we take today help ensure we all have a future to build tomorrow.

Building a resilient business

Through the leadership of our chief financial officer, Warren Zaccaro, we joined HRH Prince Charles of Wales' Accounting for Sustainability Project (A4S) to help advance our sustainability commitment. A4S aims to inspire finance leaders to drive a shift toward resilient business models and a sustainable economy. In 2019, we became a founding member of the first U.S. chapter of the global A4S Chief Financial Officer Leadership Network to help advance the A4S goals.

All companies across all industries can contribute to a healthy environment. We are honored to join forces with other companies to achieve a net zero emissions economy and limit the negative impacts of climate change.

Signing the A4S Net Zero Statement of Support

As our participation in A4S expanded, we signed the A4S Net Zero Statement of Support in 2020, joining organizations worldwide in committing to publish a pathway to net zero emissions.

Sourcing our energy responsibly

With our headquarters in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, we’re fortunate to be able to work with District Energy St. Paul since 1984 to heat and cool our 1-million-square-foot campus with locally produced, renewable energy sources. This includes a combination of biomass-fueled cogeneration, thermal storage and solar thermal technology. You can read about how it works here.

Sustainability certifications

Optimizing our workplaces is a pillar of our environmental stewardship. We hold the following certifications for our Securian Financial Center 400 or 401 headquarters buildings in St. Paul.

Leed 2020 silver

Our 2019 LEED Silver recertification symbolizes our dedication to making continuous improvements toward reducing our 401 building’s impact on the environment, our communities and the people within them. LEED certification is valid for five years.

ENERGY STAR certification: Certified buildings perform in the top 25 percent of comparable buildings in key energy use benchmarks and contribute about 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions as similar buildings.1 Our 400 and 401 buildings received ENERGY STAR certification in 2020.

Raising environmental awareness internally

Helping our employees understand our environmental efforts — what we’re doing, why and how they can get involved — aids our success in incorporating sustainability into our business. A sample of the internal programs that encourage our employees’ engagement includes:

  • Sustainable Workplace Committee consists of employees from across the company who help us prioritize and implement environmental initiatives for a healthy workplace.
  • The employee-led Environmental Health and Sustainability affinity group engages colleagues in environmental education, awareness and volunteer opportunities.
  • Organics recycling, a program that requires employees’ participation in order to be successful, helps us prevent food waste from entering landfills.
  • An incentivized public transit benefit program encourages employees to take alternative forms of transportation to work.
