What does the policy cover?

Our critical illness insurance is designed to offer maximum flexibility and stand out in the marketplace with over 80 covered conditions and innovative features that meet the needs of diverse workforces.

  • Metastatic cancer — Provides a benefit for the metastasis of cancer diagnosed prior to the plan effective date.
  • Mental health  Robust screening and treatment benefits for several mental health conditions, including depression, generalized anxiety, substance abuse disorder, ADHD, PTSD and autism.
  • Fertility  Provides a diagnoses-triggered benefit to support families dealing with infertility, with multiple plan options available.
  • Reproductive health - Inclusive benefits that support a range of conditions, including premature menopause, egg or sperm harvesting, reproductive organ disorders and infections.
  • Type 1 and type 2 diabetes  One of the first carriers to offer a benefit for the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
  • Health and wellness, including annual physical  Many health and wellness benefits in the marketplace offer a different set of screenings and do not include an annual physical exam. Our products include one of the most comprehensive lists with up to 60 screenings available in our standard policies.

Core covered conditions

Seven core conditions are covered in various percentages depending on the plan design selected. Core conditions can be paired with additional covered conditions to address the financial and health risks facing your organization.

Additional features and options

  • Diagnosis-based claims payment — Our critical illness claims are paid upon diagnosis, not upon treatment.
  • No health questions — During the initial enrollment period, employees may be able to enroll for coverage without providing proof of good health.
  • Multiple payout — If an employee has a separate covered condition, this option allows for more than one benefit payment after 30 days.
  • Continuation options — Upon termination, an employee may be eligible to continue coverage by paying premiums directly to Securian (subject to the policy’s terms).
  • Recurrence — After 12 months, this option allows more than one benefit payment for the same covered condition. Eligible conditions include full benefit cancer, heart attack, stroke and major organ failure. Recurrence benefits pay 25 percent of the coverage amount.

How does this insurance work?

If an employee is diagnosed with a condition covered by the policy and meets the policy requirements, our critical illness insurance will pay a lump sum benefit.

Benefits are paid at a percentage of the amount of coverage the employee has elected.

Our policy provides Jill the following benefits:

  • Heart attack benefit at 100 percent of Jill’s elected coverage amount
  • Non-invasive cancer benefit of 25 percent

  • Coronary artery disease needing bypass surgery or angioplasty benefit of 25 percent

In no event will we pay benefits where the insured’s covered condition is caused directly or indirectly by, results in whole or in part from, or for which there is contribution from any of the following: 1. self-inflicted injury, self-destruction, or autoeroticism, whether sane or insane; 2. suicide or attempted suicide, whether sane or insane; 3. the insured’s participation in, or attempt to commit, a crime, assault, felony, or any illegal activity, regardless of any legal proceedings thereto; 4. the insured’s use of alcohol; 5. the insured’s use of prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, illegal drugs, medications, poisons, gases, fumes, or other substances taken, absorbed, inhaled, ingested, or injected unless taken or used as prescribed by a physician, or an over-the-counter drug as directed by the manufacturer; 6. motor vehicle collision or accident where the insured is the operator of the motor vehicle and the insured’s blood alcohol level meets or exceeds the level at which intoxication is defined in the state where the collision or accident occurred, regardless of any legal proceedings thereto; or 7. war or any act of war, whether declared or undeclared.
