Consumer Privacy Requests

Your privacy is important to Securian Financial Group (“Securian”),* and we are committed to safeguarding, preserving, and respecting your privacy rights. Under the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (“CCPA”), California residents about whom Securian collects personal information have the following rights:

  • The right to know:
    • The types of personal information Securian has collected about you
    • The types of sources from which Securian collects personal information
    • The business reason for collecting personal information
    • The types of businesses with whom Securian shares personal information
    • The personal information that Securian has collected about you
    • The types of personal information about you Securian provides to other businesses that help Securian provide services
  • The right to request deletion of personal information maintained by Securian
  • The right to correct inaccurate personal information maintained by Securian
  • The right to opt-out of the sale or sharing of their personal information for the purpose of cross-context behavioral advertising

Securian will respond to your request within 45 days of receiptIf more time is needed to process your request, Securian may request a 45-day extension but will notify you within the first 45 days to inform you of the need for an extension.

Securian’s Personal Information Collection and Disclosure Practices

During the regular course of business, Securian may collect and disclose the following types of personal information:

  • Identifiers such as name, address, IP address, driver’s license or state identification number, and Social Security number
  • Financial account information
  • Health information
  • Information that identifies, relates to, describes, or is capable of being associated with or describes a particular individual such as signatures, physical characteristics, and financial information
  • Characteristics of protected classifications under California or federal law such as sex, age, or military or veteran status
  • Commercial information such as records of services purchased
  • Biometric information
  • Internet or other electronic network activity information
  • Geolocation data
  • Audio, electronic, visual, thermal, olfactory, or similar information
  • Professional or employment related information
  • Education information
  • Inferences drawn from personal information used to create a profile

Sensitive personal information is a subset of personal information and includes: government identifiers such as a Social Security number, financial information such as log in or account numbers, precise geolocation data, race, religion or union membership, contents of private communications, genetic data, biometric information, health information, and sexual orientation.

Securian collects personal information from the following types of sources:

  • Customers, potential customers, and representatives
  • Beneficiaries and representatives
  • Third-Party administrators
  • Reinsurers
  • Employees, contractors, former employees, and applicants
  • Brokers, dealers, advisors, distributors, and channel partners
  • Credit reporting agencies
  • Government agencies
  • Medical providers
  • Marketing partners
  • Vendor partners
  • Social media interactions
  • Other business partners
  • Website visitors
  • Regulators

Securian collects and may disclose to partners personal information for business purposes including:

  • Providing, administering, and marketing financial services
  • Reviewing and improving our business practices and results
  • Determining how to serve our customers and partners better
  • Staying in contact with individuals
  • Evaluating and reaching out to prospective employees and business partners
  • Analyzing activities and use features on our websites
  • Detecting and preventing fraud and misuse
  • Ensuring Securian meets its legal obligations
  • Providing access to Securian facilities and systems

Securian may collect and disclose sensitive personal information to partners for business purposes including:

  • Auditing interactions and transactions with consumers;
  • Detecting and preventing security incidents and other fraudulent, deceptive, or illegal activities;
  • Identifying and repairing errors;
  • Short-term transient use including non-personalized advertising as part of a consumer’s current interaction with Securian;
  • Performing services on behalf of a business (ie., maintaining accounts, customer service, processing or fulfilling transactions, verifying customer information, processing payments, etc.);
  • Undertaking internal research;
  • Undertaking activities to verify quality or safety and to improve services;
  • Providing some forms of advertising and marketing services;

Securian does not use or disclose sensitive personal information for any purpose other than those specified above.

Securian’s Personal Information Sharing Practices

Certain personal information may be collected when a consumer visits Securian websites which may be shared with partners in order to serve advertisements across other websites. Consumers may opt out of this sharing by utilizing a ‘browser opt-out signal’ or by submitting an opt-out request.

Securian shares personal information with the following types of partners

  • Marketing partners

Securian may share the following types of personal information:

  • Identifiers such as IP address
  • Internet or other electronic network activity information

If you utilize a ‘browser opt-out signal’ which indicates to a website’s host that you wish to opt-out of this type of sharing, that signal will be processed as a valid request to opt-out of this sharing, and Securian will not share your personal information collected via browsing activity for that purpose.

If you opt out of this sharing, the preference will persist for as long as we can recognize your browser or device. For example, if you clear your cookies or visit our website from another device or IP address, we will not recognize that you are the same person who has already submitted an opt out.

Data Retention

Securian uses a Functional Retention Schedule (FRS) to identify the time period that information must be retained. The FRS is organized into record categories based on the function, purpose, or use of the information. The retention period associated with each category is determined using the following criteria: business need for the information, statutory and regulatory requirements for retention, rules promulgated by self-regulatory organizations, and industry best practices.

Additional information

If you exercise your rights, Securian will not deny you goods or services, charge you different prices, or provide you with a different quality of goods or services. Securian does not sell personal information as defined by the law.

Securian does not sell or share personal information for individuals under the age of 16 as defined by the law.
