Commitment and flexibility: Securian Financial's support for military employees

Q&A with Loren Sadlack and Erich Axmacher: The value of supporting service members at work

In today's ever-evolving professional landscape, supporting employees who balance dual roles—both in their civilian careers and as service members—is essential. Securian Financial strives to uphold this commitment by providing a supportive environment for military personnel. In this Q&A session, Loren, a Securian Financial employee and Air Force leader, and Erich, Loren's team leader, discuss the importance of this support and how it has positively impacted their professional and personal lives.

Q: How do you feel supported by your team in order to be successful at work and in the Air Force?

Loren: My leader, Erich, has been incredible since I started reporting to him in July 2023. He quickly acknowledges the challenges I face with two roles and helps me to balance the commitments from each. Earlier this year, he went above and beyond while I was away for a formal military school, taking on extra work to ensure our team initiatives continued smoothly. Knowing that Erich has my back when I'm performing my Air Force duties gives me incredible peace of mind and helps me focus on the job at hand.

Q: Erich, how do you approach supporting team members who have dual roles, like Loren?

Erich: Supporting team members like Loren is about understanding the unique challenges they face and being flexible. I try to stay communicative and adaptable, ensuring that they feel supported in both their civilian and military roles. It's important to acknowledge their contributions and make sure they know their efforts are valued, whether they're in the office or serving our country.

Q: The employer flight is such an amazing experience; what gave you the idea to invite Erich?

Loren: I wanted a unique way to say "thank you" to Erich for his support when I needed to be away for my Air Force role. The employer flight offered a unique experience and a chance for him to see and hear firsthand how operations occur in the military reserves. It also highlighted the demands each reservist faces in balancing their military and civilian roles. Thanks to the 934th Airlift Wing for making events like this a priority, as it helps employers understand and appreciate the work that comes with a role in the Air Force.

Q: Erich, what was your experience like during the employer flight?

Erich: The employer flight was an eye-opening experience. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the responsibilities and challenges that reservists like Loren manage. Seeing the operations up close and understanding the level of commitment required was truly inspiring. It reinforced my commitment to providing the necessary support to our team members who serve in the military.

Q: What sets Securian apart from other employers in supporting employees in the military?

Loren: Beyond the great benefits for those still serving, Securian truly "walks the walk" when supporting military employees. In my 4+ years at Securian, I've had to step away several times for training, exercises, and deployment. Whenever I leave, I feel like I’m letting down the company. However, Securian focuses not on the void I leave behind but on how best they can support me and my family while I'm away, and truly celebrating my service to our country. This approach removes the guilt and allows me to focus fully on my role as a leader in the Air Force.

Q: Erich, how does Securian ensure that Service members feel included and have a sense of belonging within the organization?

Erich: Securian has several Associate Resource Groups (ARGs), and the Servicemember Associate Resource Group (SARG) has been a game changer for employees like Loren. These groups provide camaraderie and support among veterans, family members of veterans, military supporters, and those still serving. It's a valuable part of why our military employees feel included and appreciated within the organization.

Loren: I hadn't experienced a military-focused ARG at previous organizations and realized its value here. The camaraderie among veterans, family members of veterans, military supporters, and those still serving adds significant value and enhances my enjoyment of being part of this organization.

Supporting service members isn't just about providing benefits—it's about creating a culture of understanding, appreciation, and genuine support. Securian sets a high standard in this regard, ensuring their service members feel valued and included. Thanks to leaders like Erich and initiatives like the SARG, employees balancing military and civilian roles can thrive with peace of mind and a sense of belonging.

Securian Financial is proud to be certified as a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon company for proactively supporting service members and military families.
