Securian Financial scores high on 2024 Disability Equality Index

Named a “Best Places to Work for Disability Inclusion”

Building a diverse and inclusive culture demands more than good intentions. Benchmarking, metrics and listening are required to help Securian foster and maintain a supportive atmosphere where all associates can do their best work.

This year, for the first time, Securian took part in the Disability Equality Index ® (the Index) for a deeper understanding of how we serve this population. Each participating company receives a score on a scale of zero to 100, with those earning 80 and above recognized as a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion.”

Securian scored 90 on the Index. “We are proud of our first-year score, but it is really just a tool to help us get better,” said Tariq Malik, chief diversity officer. “A survey like this helps us see what we are doing well and where we have opportunities. Armed with this information and in partnership with those that identify as part of this community, we can focus on prioritizing solutions that help everyone equitably thrive at Securian.”

The Disability Equality Index was created in 2015 and was originally developed as a joint initiative of Disability: IN and the Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). A score of 100 does not indicate or imply perfection. There is always room to advance disability inclusion regardless of one’s score. A score of 100 indicates adherence to many leading disability inclusion practices.

Securian implemented the Index in mid-2023 as a part of our Win with Purpose strategy and related outcomes.

“Now that we have the results back from the Index, our Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) office is looking forward to engaging with our Mental Wellness and Disability associate resource group and our DEI Council,” said Tariq. “We will also be partnering with functions across Securian to address gaps. Amplifying the voices of our associates who identify as having disabilities will improve the Securian experience for everyone.”
